Frequently asked questions
Is consultation fee GST-exempt for Indian doctors?
Yes. Healthcare services provided by clinical establishments, authorised medical practitioners, and paramedics are exempt from GST under the healthcare services exemption (Notification No. 12/2017-Central Tax). This applies to outpatient consultations, inpatient care, and most diagnostic services.
Are cosmetic procedures GST-taxable?
Yes. Cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures that are not therapeutic (e.g., aesthetic procedures, hair transplants, Botox for cosmetic purposes) attract 18% GST. The exemption applies specifically to medically necessary services.
Is GST applicable on hospital room rent?
Room rent for hospitals up to ₹5,000/day per patient (excluding ICU) is GST-exempt. Above this threshold, the room rent attracts 5% GST without ITC (effective 18 July 2022).
What about telemedicine and online consultations?
Online consultations and telemedicine provided by authorised medical practitioners qualify under the same healthcare services exemption and are therefore GST-exempt.
Are diagnostic tests (X-ray, MRI, blood tests) GST-exempt?
Yes. Diagnostic services provided in clinical establishments are part of the healthcare services exemption and are GST-exempt.
Do I need to charge GST on medicines I sell to patients?
Medicines sold are a separate supply of goods and attract GST as per pharma rates (typically 5% or 12% depending on the medicine). If your clinic also runs a pharmacy, you need GST registration if the pharmacy turnover crosses the threshold (₹40 lakh for goods in most states).
Is this calculator legally binding?
No — this is an informational tool based on current GST law (as of 2026-05). Always consult a qualified Chartered Accountant for your clinic's specific situation. GST rules can change; verify against the latest CBIC notifications.
